Shania Hardie is a Toronto based artist who turned her passion into a business.
In Her Own Words…
I have always loved creating. Growing up on a lake with few children around, I often had to entertain myself with drawing, playing with blocks, and in the winter, creating snow sculptures and forts. I loved starting with a blank canvas and creating something.
Despite my love and passion for creating, the pursuit of the infamous ‘starving artist’ was not appealing to my 18 year old self. Instead, I found myself pursuing a bachelor of commerce and jumping into the world of business. Aside from the occasional doodling in meetings, I focused all my attention on my business career.
I enjoyed my job but could feel that something was missing from my life. One day, I found myself wandering around an artist supply shop. I picked up some canvas and paints, took them home and just let myself get lost in the colours. I lost track of time, painting late into the night. This was what I had been missing!
Eventually, I built up the courage to begin sharing my creations via social media. It was a tough step to being sharing so publicly however, I was blown away by the support and interest…and then requests to purchase. What began as an outlet to bring joy back into my life, soon turned into a spark of an idea that I could develop my unique style and make art my career.
I’m a huge advocate of doing what you love, and I finally took my own advice. I love being able to bring energy and inspiration to people through my art. The rewarding experience of working with clients to create a piece that they will love and value as part of their collection propels me to keep moving forward.
